Hey everyone-I'm back! Safe and Sound! After a horrible weekend, I have indeed returned. I am sorry I have missed so much rehearsal and I hope that I can catch up quickly. I am trying right now to reconcile my conflicts this weekend so that I can attend the extra rehearsal on Sunday. I just hope that it doesn't come down to a decision on my part between that and callbacks for Metamorphoses. Looking forward to seeing you all on Friday-I have a few surprises! Bobby |

WHAT ABOUT "SIX ON THE BEACH" ? |

hey guys...
okay....so once again i had written this long thing.... and promptly deleted it.
notes and questions.
Diction
are we still gonna get a meeting with Danny? is that still possible? what do we want to ask him, talk to him about? should we try to schedule a meeting with President Wallace?
we need to be thinking about names for the group. i don't have any yet....i'm trying, and everything seems to sound like the name for a pet or a punk band. i'm just going to have to sit down and think on it.
does this count as any sort of practicum?
do we need to have set encores that are nothing but encores? or should we just have songs that we save just in case?
songs to look over before Wednesday All I Ask At the Round Earth Delightful Pleasant Groves Seasons of Love Carol of the Bells
Notes for Boogie Woogie: *make sure the skips from note to note are extremely clear. *blend vowel sounds....make it tall *why do we sing this song? why did they sing this song?
Does anybody have a recording of the Andrews Sisters doing this? i would like to hear it.
i think those are the main points i made.
now, i thought this was a good idea because we could paste our thoughts and ideas even complaints or concers here and remain anonymous, that's why it's a journal and not a 'group' where we would each have to have seperate accounts to talk. i just wanted a place where we could be open with each other about stuff and have a place to jot things down if they came to us in the night.
however, if this is just one more thing to check, one more thing to worry about....i don't want this to be more of a hassle than a help. so if it's a bother and too much trouble to check....do tell.
or don't.
either way.
i'll keep posting stuff that i remember or write down during the rehearsals that directly involve myself. group numbers that i am in and my solo work. and i'll write down questions that we come up with and what not.
guess i'll go do the ole Art History

I think it was pretty great on Friday as well! It was kinda sad that we didn't have everyone there on Saturday though! Even though it was a great show, I still wish that everyone was able to be there! But anyway, on to a new week of rehearsals! Adios! |

Sasha's personal notes
here are my notes on my personal songs and our songs that we sing together...just some thoughts... (can you tell i don't wanna do my Art History?)
Write out really clear what each phrase means....especially if you repeat the phrase...because it has to mean something different every time. *allow the air in - more support in places in Horton for the focus on Horton....choose a point and stick with it. preferably somewhere barely over the center of the audience.
switch tactics quickly. make the decision and SWITCH. "ok i know what you don't see in me .. . i'm a bit awkward . . BUT!" beg or demand.
after "turned over" *see?!?! see?!?! you don't see. you #*($ing jerk."
hide when you say "hidden" no pause before "tweet" BIG --> specific with tail bit. really "Notice me....and my fabulous tail" Have great diction....nobody is going to have any idea what i am singing about unless they understand "Horton" FFFFeather by FFFFFeather.
don't just throw your arms out. have a reason. hit the sts in Deserts PLAY --> small and LARGE get the F into Feathers connect "To be there for...." pose all sexy like and then immediately the Daffy Duck Burn Be specific with your exit. find a reason to leave the stage. Make each movement have a reason
SHARE THE JOY WITH THE AUDIENCE. REALLY ATTACK THE BEGNNING
find the vocal dynamics.
OPERATOR *be sure to accent the right parts *we are the drums (the back up) *watch Jeanette at the end ... *relax *stay tight. ray charles tight
LOSING MY MIND *loose and lifted. don't let the pitch suffer because of the theatricality <--is this a word guys? *consonants *crescendo on any noes held more than two counts
it was better the second time. *don't wiggle the shoulders so much *stay connected to the words *go though and find the spaces you want to carry over or cut it off |

Some of Sasha's notes
when singing a solo - be sure you figure out who you are singing to...the audience? a single person? an idea or goal? Figure it out. Write it out.
Think....what triggers your song to start? the first bit of the song must have a triggering moment. what happens in the 'moment before'? along these same lines every time there is a musical break these have to be moments of reevaluation. 'why didn't my last tactic work? what should i try next?' that sort of thing. and then go with your next tactic.
*When singing the Alma Mater ~ this is actually to the college. how does one sing to a thing? a college? *Did you know the National Anthem is sung to the guy sitting next to you? *When singing to the audience it's like a soliloquy in a play...the audience becomes your confidant (sp?) ~ so talk to them.
The choices of song eventually have to be up to us...depending on the venue. *What effect do we want the show to have? *What do we want from the audience? (how are we going to impress them?)
we have to ask a lot of questions.
"If words are tools, consonants are darts"
Assignment from Tom ~divide up your song thought by thought and paraphrase what the words mean ~say your song as if it were a monologue to find where the natural inflection of the words would be if there were no music ~give what you want to do with the words of your song an action adverb/verb. i want to ________ with these words. "pathetically beg" like that. ~where is the conflict in the song? where is the climax? why does your song begin in the first place? where does your song intensify? ~Chart the arc of the song
"Words are tools to get what you want" *find the onamanopoeias in your song. any word can be an onamanopoeia *Always try to find the humor! there is some type of humor in everything. *Never add a song to your repetoire without first singing it to your buddies to see if it works for you. *If you take the song out of the context of it's show....where else could it fit? what other situations? there should be some cohesive 'story' to our cabarets.
"The only thing you should apologize publicly for is being late"
"Judge yourself after you sing. NOT DURING"
DICTION !!!!!! p is a plosive. . . use it
DON'T clear your throat. it's really bad for your chords. just cough. DON'T close your eyes DON'T ever be onstage and just sit there like a bump on a log. always be involved. DON'T ever make a move without having a very specific reason for doing so. DON'T check out. DON'T loose the sense of the 'first time'
DO a 'post mortem' figure out what would work better next time. "This is a BUFF AND POLISH group" it should all look spontaneous and easy DO applaud for each other. we're a friendly group.
always ask for the things you want. you won't know unless you ask. ask - - *every time we do a show is there any way to go to the space the day before the show to get a feel for the space? *if not can we be there three hours or so beforehand to at least sorta get a feel?
*judge the situation beforehand. *don't ignore the audience between the songs. *write that personal monologue.... anybody in the world : sooo.....tell me something about yourself.... us (any one of us) : well.....let me just tell you..... |

Test Post
This page is currently for the members of the faculty, staff and students of the SCAD MPRA department who are involved in the Executive Ensemble. Here we can posts ideas and thoughts and 2 AM questions. We can respond to each other quickly via the internet and communicate easily through the web. Eventually I will sit down and create a page specifically for us, at that time all of the posts on this page will be transferred to the new page. Until then, I hope this will suffice. |
